Legend has it that on the death of Kurt Cobain in April 1994 a group of Nirvana fans gathered at the Papal Cross in The Phoenix Park and ceremoniously burned copies of Pearl Jam’s debut album Ten.

Back then, the common consensus among Dublin’s rock kids dictated that Eddie Vedder’s earnest grunge arrivistes were always a lesser group than Cobain’s doom and dread trio.

However, Pearl Jam went on to become music’s great refusniks. Their contrary attitude to the corporate rock system that they had been accused of being part of made them one of the few big acts who actually strove for authenticity in the face of sell-out. Latter day albums like Riot Act and Backspacer reveal that Pearl Jam were far more than the grunge Bon Jovi.

They are about to mark their 20th anniversary with the release of a new documentary movie, Pearl Jam 20, directed by their old mucker, rock hack turned director Cameron Crowe.

The film is billed as a "definitive portrait of the band" culled from more than 1,200 hours of rarely and never-before-seen footage, over 24 hours of recent interviews with the band, as well as live footage of their concert performances. The band will release the documentary on September 20 in select cinemas for one night only, including venues all over Ireland.
