Music legend Tom Jones has moved to reassure fans that he is in good health, and has dismissed reports that he is suffering from heart problems.

The 71-year-old was due to perform at a festival in Monaco at the weekend but was admitted to hospital, with initial reports suggesting a heart scare.

However, a statement posted on Jones' website on Sunday read: "Sir Tom was ordered by doctors not to perform in Monte Carlo yesterday evening, due to severe dehydration.

"This was extremely disappointing for Tom, the band and all connected with the tour. This was the last date of a very successful 3 month tour, where many of the shows were in locations that were in the throes of high summer heat.

"There are NO heart problems, as has been reported in the press.

"Sir Tom wants to relay his deep regrets for causing disappointment and inconvenience to all who would have come to enjoy his show last night.

"He thanks everyone for their understanding and support, and hopes to see the fans in Monte Carlo again soon."

The Daily Mail reports that the singer spent a second night in Monaco's Princess Grace Hospital on Sunday, with a hospital spokesperson describing his condition as stable.
