Oprah Winfrey, James Earl Jones and makeup artist Dick Smith will all receive honorary Oscars at a ceremony in November.

The Academy's third annual Governors Awards dinner and ceremony takes place on Saturday, November 12, with Winfrey receiving the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award in recognition of her extensive charitable, philanthropic and educational efforts.

Actor Jones and makeup artist Smith, meanwhile, will receive honorary Academy Awards in recognition of lengthy and distinguished careers.

Jones's career stretches from Dr Strangelove to Star Wars, while makeup artist Smith began plying his trade more than half a century ago.

Of the three recipients, Smith is the only one to have won a competitive Oscar, for Amadeus in 1984. He was also nominated for Dad in 1989.

Winfrey and Jones were both nominated for acting awards - Winfrey as Best Supporting Actress for The Color Purple in 1985, Jones as Best Actor for The Great White Hope in 1970 - but neither won.
