It is reported that Frank Darabont, the creator and executive producer of The Walking Dead, is stepping down as showrunner of the series, despite appearing on the horror-drama's panel at Comic-Con in the US last Friday.

Deadline.com, which broke the story, says there is speculation that Darabont could leave the show completely, but that talks are ongoing about him remaining with the series in some capacity.

The website cites the daily demands of producing a TV series as a possible reason for director Darabont's (The Green Mile, The Shawshank Redemption) stepping down.

Season two of The Walking Dead premieres on American television on October 16.
