US Open champion Rory McIlroy and his long-term girlfriend Holly Sweeney have decided to part ways.

The couple broke-up last week just before the British Open Championship which was won by fellow Northern Irish golfer Darren Clarke.

Sweeney was absent from the competition in Kent, but at the time claimed she would stay at home because she feared she would bring him bad luck.

Last night however, Rory's management company issued a statement saying: "Rory McIlroy's long-time relationship with Holly Sweeney came to an amicable end before the Open Championship."

McIlroy and Sweeney broke up just before Christmas but got back together after a short time apart. Only a few weeks ago, the BBC aired a documentary featuring the pair together on McIlroy's return from Washington after winning the US Open.

McIlroy spoke publicly about how he had to grovel and work to get Sweeney back after their initial split crediting her as the inspiration behind his 8-shot US Open win, as well as keeping him grounded.

Rumours are circulating linking the golfer to top-rated tennis player Caroline Wozniacki after they were reportedly spotted together in London on Sunday night.
