The first lady of France Carla Bruni has confirmed that she and her husband Nicolas Sarkozy are expecting their first child together.
Speculation about Bruni’s pregnancy has been rife for months and her father-in-law Pal only added fire to the rumours last week, when he told a newspaper he was looking forward to meeting his grandchild.
In an interview with Nice-Martin, Bruni described her pregnancy as an “unexpected and unhoped for happiness.”
When asked whether or not she knew the sex of her unborn child, she said: "That I do not know myself."
Bruni, who already has a son called Aurélien, also revealed that she kept the news out the public eye for so long, to protect her family’s privacy.
The couple met in 2007 and married several months later.
