Best known for his role as Dr Carter in 'ER', Noah Wyle is returning to television in a new sci-fi drama called ‘Falling Skies’.

And this time around he’s not wearing a white coat or carrying a stethoscope. Instead he’s playing a man called Tom Mason, who’s busy helping to save the world from an alien invasion.

“That was part of the appeal for me,” he told TV Line, “to do something radically different than anything I've done before.

"After I finished 'ER,' I think it was smart to stay away from episodic television for a while, and it wasn't until this script came around that getting back to work was tempting. I got really excited about doing this, and it was fun."

Another attraction for the 40-year-old Californian was the fact that 'Falling Skies' was co-created by the legendary Steven Spielberg. Broadcast in the United States on the cable channel TNT, 'Falling Skies' will be on British satellite channel FX on this side of the Atlantic.

“It's very cinematic, and I think a lot of that has to do with Mr. Spielberg's pedigree and involvement with the show,” says Wyle.

“It was something totally different for me, and a chance to work, once again, with DreamWorks - they were one of the producing entities behind 'ER,' so I go back quite a ways with Mr. Spielberg.”
