A charity event in New York City organised by pop group the Black Eyed Peas was cancelled yesterday due to poor weather conditions.
The cancellation sent hundreds of people dashing to the exits, some of them booing along the way. More than 50,000 people had won tickets to the event in an online giveaway in May.
The event was intended to benefit the Robin Hood Foundation, which fights poverty in NYC.
Warm-up acts were supposed to come on at 5:30 pm but Natasha Bedingfield, Tony Bennett, Carole King, Whoopi Goldberg, Zach Braff, LL Cool J and DJ Cassidy never made it to the stage.
The Black Eyed Peas’ performance was then put back an hour due to heavy thunderstorms, however shortly before they were expected to appear onstage, an announcement was made cancelling the concert.
BEP member Taboo took to the band’s Twitter account yesterday to apologise to fans. He said: "Fergie is really sorry it's not happening we feel horrible...We are devastated and Fergie told me to tweet this she loves u all.”
“I hope that the concert will be rescheduled ASAP, our pea-peo deserve it, my people from chase and robinhood deserve this NYC we love u."
In a statement the Robin Hood Foundation said: “The heat wasn’t going to stop them, the rain wasn’t going to stop them, but the lightning–it stopped them. It came down to safety for everyone. Organizers are hoping to reschedule, so ticket buyers should hold onto their tickets. Robinhood.org will have information in the next week or so.”
