The winner of the 10th series of 'American Idol' was announced on US television on Wednesday night.

Seventeen-year-old country singer Scott McCreery saw off the challenge of another teenage country singer, Lauren Alaina, to be crowned champion.

After his win, he said: "It's been a year now since Lauren and I tried out. I gotta thank the Lord first - he got me here."

McCreery said he and Alaina had "stuck together" throughout their 'American Idol' experience.

Billboard reports that a record 122.4m votes were cast during the performance show on Tuesday, giving a season total of more than 730m votes.
