Oprah Winfrey will bid farewell to fans after 25 years as America's most popular talk show queen when the final episode of her chat show airs in the US today.

The first part of her Surprise Spectacular farewell was filmed last week in Chicago with 13,000 fans and a host of Hollywood A Listers and has been broadcast over two days, with the final show airing today.

Viewers were treated to performances from the likes of Alicia Keys, Aretha Franklin and Usher and appearances from Tom Cruise, Madonna, Halle Berry, Tom Hanks, Will Smith and Maria Shriver while Oprah's long-term partner Stedman Graham paid a heartfelt tribute to her.

The final part of the Surprise Spectacular also saw appearances from X Factor judge Simon Cowell while Stevie Wonder and Jamie Foxx opened the show with a performance.

Following her recent separation from Arnold Schwarzenegger, Maria Shriver made an appearance and said: "(Oprah) has given me love, support, wisdom and most of all the truth. (I'm ) not alone in receiving those gifts."

Madonna told the delighted audience at Chicago's United Center:
"She's a self-made woman who's been at the top of her game for over 25 years - and she's still kicking ass."

She added: "It's no secret that millions of people are inspired by Oprah. I am one of those people...She fights for things she believes in, even if it makes her unpopular...I have learned so much from her."

Speaking about Oprah Madonna said: "I have learned so much from her."

Tom Cruise told Winfrey it was an honour to have been on her show 12 times since 1988 and referring to his first appearance on the show 23 years ago, Winfrey quipped: "You looked like you were 10."

R&B singer Beyonce introduced her performance on the show by saying: "Oprah Winfrey, because of you, women everywhere have graduated to a new level of understanding of what we are, who we are, and who we can be...We can run the world!"

Tom Hanks, Jada Pinkett Smith and husband Will joined Oprah for her farewell shows

Tom Hanks added: "Your show has turned surprise into an art form. You are surrounded by nothing but love."

Halle Berry said: "(Oprah has taught us) We’re more alike than different. All pain is the same."

Will Smith: "Oprah said if this didn’t work out for her, she would have become a 4th grade teacher. You did become a teacher, with the whole world as your classroom."

Rosie O'Donnell: "You saved us from depression when you gave us Dr. Phil."
