Irish band Villagers have won the Ivor Novello award for best song musically and lyrically at this year's awards.

The well-established awards, now in their 56th year, reward the best songs from the past year.

Villager's 'Becoming A Jackal' won the award, after facing competition from fellow nominees Foals for their track 'Spanish Sahara' and Everything Everything for 'MY KZ, UR BF'.

The Best Album award went to Plan B for 'The Defamation of Strickland Banks'. The International Achievement award went to Muse and the award for Outstanding Song Collection went to Steve Winwood.

The XX are nominated for best contemporary song for their track 'Islands', along with Katy B's 'Katy On A Mission' and Tine Tempah's 'Pass Out'.

The annual awards are voted by songwriters and composers.

The event took place in London's Grosvenor Hotel.
