American TV network ABC has cancelled a number of dramas to make way for new ones – and the main casualty is the star-studded ‘Brothers & Sisters’.

Starring Sally Field, Calista Flockhart, Rachel Griffiths and many others, the drama about the wine-quaffing Walker family was a big hit with Irish viewers.

But ever since Rob Lowe left after the show’s fourth season, there had been rumours of the show’s demise, due to its high wage bill, big cast and need for new and dramatic storylines.

Welsh actor Matthew Rhys, who played lawyer Kevin Walker, told Entertainment Weekly in January that ”we’ve run a lot of extreme stories and big stories, so I personally wouldn’t want to be a writer if I had to stretch it another season.”

Brothers and Sisters already aired its finale on TV in the United States a week ago, but the show’s fifth and final season is yet to begin on RTÉ One and continues on MORE 4.

ABC has also dropped ‘V’, ‘No Ordinary Family’, ‘Detroit 1-8-7’ and ‘Off the Map’ – all due to poor or disappointing ratings.
