Charlie Sheen was booed off stage at the Detroit debut of his live show, "My Violent Torpedo of Truth/Defeat Is Not an Option," according to reports.

The star and the women he calls his "goddesses" appeared onstage to thunderous applause initially at the first date of his planned 20-stop variety show tour.

Fans who gathered outside the Fox Theatre in Detroit before the show said they hoped to hear some of the unrestrained rants that the actor has become known for in recent months.

They greeted the ex-Two and A Half Men star with a standing ovation when he first appeared onstage, however, the positive audience reaction did not last long, with members yelling at Sheen for a refund of their money and walking out of the show.

ABC News reports that Sheen responded: "I already got your money, dude." Sheen had said the Detroit show, where tickets cost €30 to €57, had sold out.

Sheen descended into a "nonsensical speech seemingly directed at his critics" which did nothing to curry favour with the audience members who began leaving the theatre.

Entertainment Weekly gave a rundown of the proceedings of the evening, saying: "The padded and disjointed show was a hodgepodge of video clips and Sheen-isms that felt hastily assembled and misjudged the patience of even the hardest of hardcore fans."

Sheen had said that rapper Snoop Dogg would perform at the show but he did not, instead the show ended with a video of Snoop Dogg's new single before the lights came on.
