Grey's Anatomy - Creator Shonda Rhimes teases new storyline

'Grey's Anatomy' creator Shonda Rhimes has promised fans of the show that there will be a "big story" involving Derek (Patrick Dempsey) and Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) towards the end of this season.

Warning: spoiler alert!

In the current season the two characters have been somewhat in the background, but Rhimes told TVGuide.com that part of the upcoming musical episode would be devoted to them.

"Meredith and Derek have been dealing with infertility, and it's starting to be a really sore point," she said.

"Part of [the musical episode] is about really bringing up how painful it is for Meredith to be watching other people get pregnant, have babies and deal with that other stuff."

Rhimes then said that the Alzheimer's clinical trial which both doctors are involved in will kickstart a new storyline for them.

"We've been using the clinical trial for a while and that's going to launch into a very big story about them as we head towards the end of the season," she said.
