'Waking the Dead' star Sue Johnston has said she feels "robbed" after the BBC's decision to end the police drama.

In an interview with the TV Times Johnston, who plays Dr Grace Foley in the series, says: "I'm very sad about it. It was a lovely job. The show gets great audiences, it's sold all over the world and I don't quite get why it's going.

"You'd have to talk to the powers-that-be. They say it's too expensive to make in these austere days."

Her co-star Trevor Eve, who plays Detective Superintendent Peter Boyd, adds: "It's had an audience appreciation rating of 90%, which I think is higher than anything else.

"We were going to finish after 10 [series], but we stopped after nine because the BBC doesn't really have the money to make it.

"I mean, they could make it if we changed how it's done at the moment, but I don't want that. I can't see the point of suddenly delivering a show that's a different kind of programme, just to cut costs.

"The BBC can go and make other stuff that costs them less money, it's fine."

The final series of 'Waking the Dead' begins on BBC One on Sunday, 13 March.

A new spin-off, 'The Body Farm', which will star 'Waking the Dead' actress Tara Fitzgerald (Eve Lockhart), is being filmed by Eve's production company.
