Boyband McFly has admitted bassist Dougie Poynter is in ‘rehab’ for a broken heart following his split with Saturdays’ singer Frankie Sandford.

Lead singer Tom Fletcher finally admitted his whereabouts over the weekend after first claiming that Poynter just had a bad cold.

Fletcher wrote on his Twitter page: "He’s just been having a tough time lately and needed a few weeks rest so he’s fighting fit and ready to slap that bass for you on tour."

Hours earlier, he told Metro: "Dougie’s just got a cold and a bit of flu. Obviously, with flu none of us want to go near him, so we have given him a few weeks off to recover."

The first three dates of the band’s tour, which was due to start on 12 March, have been postponed.

Fletcher added: "Unfortunately, it has taken up a load of our rehearsal time."

According to the paper, the extent of Poynter’s heartbreak can be seen in the video for the band’s new single 'That’s The Truth'.

It sees Poynter, 23, reading a letter, crying on a bed and singing: "How can you treat me like that, when I give my all to you?"

Fletcher admits the song "is about a break-up and about a girl."

On Poynter's starring role in the clip, 25-year-old Fletcher said: "I had a lead role in one of the videos, so it was Dougie’s turn in this one."

The emotional track, out this week, comes after Poynter revealed he wasn’t coping with seeing pictures of Sandford with her new boyfriend, West Ham footballer Wayne Bridge.

Poynter and Sandford ended their relationship in November after reuniting following an earlier split.
