An RTÉ Radio One documentary has won a major award at the American radio version of the Oscars, the Gracies.

Established in 1975, the Gracies are the industry’s most prestigious awards, and the RTÉ Radio 'Documentary on One' series is the only award winner from outside of the US/Canada this year.

'In the Same Boat', made by Nicoline Greer, won the Outstanding Interview Program or Feature Category, making this the 31st award the 'Documentary on One' series has won in the last three years.

Lorelei Harris, Editor, Arts and Features said: “This is a most significant win. We are no strangers to awards in the 'Documentary on One', but it’s gratifying that, having conquered Europe and east coast of the US, we’re now taking on Hollywood.

"For a public service broadcaster at the edge of Europe, our influence, and our acclaim, is global.”

In the Same Boat was made by Nicoline Greer, and tells the story of a Dublin woman called Fiona Tiernan who had the idea of creating a dragon boat racing team for survivors of breast cancer.

'Documentary on One's 'In the same Boat' will be repeated next Thursday, 3 March at 10pm on RTÉ Radio 1.
