Producers have reportedly arranged for Cheryl Cole to take intensive elocution lessons to prepare for her reported role on 'The X Factor USA'.

The Mirror has reported that, while her judging position remains unconfirmed, producers of the show were worried that viewers will not understand the accent of the singer, who flew out to Los Angeles yesterday.

The 27-year-old will apparently work with Hollywood voice coach Bob Corff before meeting with executives at the Fox Network.

A source told the paper: "If audiences and contestants can’t understand her it is actually a regulatory offence.

"Cheryl will be told not to use the word 'babe' to describe a pretty girl.

"Other key words she's being taught include a 'hard I' for words such as vitamin, saying 'pants' and not 'trousers', 'butt' not 'bum' and 'cookies' not 'biscuits'.

"Another key concern is her Geordie pronunciation of the vowel 'u'. Americans pronounce it 'oo' - as in 'tooning'.

They added: "When Ant and Dec had their flop US show 'Wanna Bet?', an elocution teacher was off camera at all recordings to pick them up on language problems.

"The same will happen to Cheryl, but the live stages mean she needs to be right on the money."

Simon Cowell is said to have signed Cole on a €590,000 (£500,000) deal, despite network reservations because she is unknown in the country.

A second source said: "These are very exciting times ahead for Cheryl and her trip to LA this week will start setting a lot of balls in motion.

"She has a very busy schedule with lots of meetings planned. It's fair to say that the charm offensive starts now and she's determined to make the most of the amazing opportunity given to her.

"Clearly, she hopes to see a lot of Derek [Hough] too but her priority is very much work and he understands that."

'The X Factor USA' auditions kick off in Los Angeles on 27 March.
