Brendan O'Carroll has revealed that his late mother, Maureen, was the inspiration for his RTÉ TV show 'Mrs. Brown's Boys'.

According to The Star, O'Carroll based the character on his mother along with many of the fiery women who sold fruit and veg on Dublin's Moore Street when he was growing up.

O'Carroll said: "My mother was the first woman elected for Labour to Dáil Eireann in 1953.

"She did things like...[setting] up a shelter for battered wives. I used to run errands for the women on Moore Street, who were all as tough as nails. But they were all so good to me."

'Mrs. Brown's Boys' is currently one of the most popular shows on Irish television, with viewing figures of 828,000.

The series is a joint production between the BBC and RTÉ and the BBC has reportedly already commissioned a second series.

Speaking about his career, O'Carroll added: "It's a fickle business, you're up and you're down...my career has been a cross between a rollercoaster and a ghost train."
