Sky Sports presenter Richard Keys resigned from his position last night, following the sacking of his colleague Andy Gray on Tuesday over the football sexism row.

Keys said he was deeply sorry for his remarks and the offence they have caused.

He said it was wrong and should not have happened.

Keys and Gray were dropped after they made sexist remarks about assistant referee Sian Massey before a Premier League game between Wolves and Liverpool at the weekend.

In his resignation statement, Keys said: "I am deeply sorry for my remarks and the offence they have caused; it was wrong and should not have happened. I have thought long and hard and reached the decision that it is time to move on.

"Going forward without Andy would have been almost impossible.

"I am and will remain proud of our work with football at Sky Sports and grateful to the many people who have worked with me. I wish Sky Sports continued success in the future."

Barney Francis, Managing Director of Sky Sports, said: "It is disappointing that Richard's career at Sky should end in these circumstances.

"However, Richard recognises that his comments at the weekend were unacceptable and we note that he has made a full and public apology.

"We thank him for his time in helping make Sky Sports the success it is today."

In an interview on UK radio station Talksport on Wednesday, Keys said he apologised to Massey on Sunday afternoon after the story broke.

"We were wrong. It was wrong. It shouldn't have happened, but there are some dark forces at work here," he said.

"From something that was controllable, I have found the reaction to be extraordinary. I cannot believe the frenzy that's blown up. If I had been able to get out the fact that I'd apologised on Sunday I don't think it would have been as frenzied as it has been."
