Sky Sports has announced that presenter Andy Gray, who made sexist comments about assistant soccer referee Sian Massey, has been sacked "in response to new evidence of unacceptable and offensive behaviour".

The Press Association reports that Gray and fellow presenter Richard Keys were recorded questioning Massey's appointment for Wolves' game with Liverpool on Saturday, claiming women did not know the offside rule.

Keys telephoned the official on behalf of both presenters on Sunday night to apologise for the remarks, which were said off air but were picked up by microphone and leaked to the media.

The Sky Sports website quotes Barney Francis, Managing Director of Sky Sports, as saying: "Andy Gray's contract has been terminated for unacceptable behaviour.

"After issuing a warning yesterday, we have no hesitation in taking this action after becoming aware of new information today."

Keys and a third Sky Sports presenter, Andy Burton, have been taken off air following the remarks about Massey.
