'Strictly Come Dancing' judge Alesha Dixon has defended contestant Ann Widdecombe against criticism.

Speaking to Metro, Dixon said: "With 'Strictly', there's always some sort of novelty dancer."

"The year I was a contestant it was Kate Garraway, then it was John Sergeant. There are always one or two dancers who are entertaining."

"It's not about competing in the ballroom world championships - it’s about seeing people progress."
