X Factor contestant Matt Cardle stole the show at the weekend and received a standing ovation from the judges for his emotional version of 'The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face' by Ewan MacColl.
Afterwards his mentor Dannii Minogue, 39, said: "I wish everyone at home knew the story you told me in the dressing room about why you sang that song and its meaning to your family."
Not only did the 27-year-old receive a standing ovation but Simon Cowell described the performance as "stunning" and Cheryl Cole said that it was "spine-tingling".
According to the Daily Star Cardle has revealed why this was such a poignant song for his family.
He said: "My mum's best mate was killed when I was 11 and she had four kids.
My mum took on those kids and absolutely made our family bigger and better.
"The oldest one Julian, his girlfriend was under similar circumstances and they got married a couple of years ago and I sang that [song] as Kate came into the church.
"The whole day was one of the most emotional times of my life."
