Billy Ray Cyrus and wife Leticia are ending their 17-year marriage and have filed for divorce.

According to the Associated Press the parents of actress and singer Miley released a statement to People yesterday: "As you can imagine, this is a very difficult time for our family."

They said they were trying to "work through some personal matters" and they appreciated fans' support.

Though the 17-year-old 'Hannah Montana' performer is currently a world-wide star, it was her father who put the Cyrus name on the map in 1992 with the hit 'Achy Breaky Heart'.

Irreconcilable differences were cited in the action filed by Billy Ray in Tennessee and he is seeking shared custody of his three minor children with Leticia or Tish, as she is known: Miley Ray, 17; Braison, 16; and Noah, 10.

Billy Ray adopted Trace and Brandi, Tish's kids from a previous marriage, but they are now of legal age.
