People.com says the singer cited "irreconcilable differences" in court papers.
TMZ says the star has asked for joint physical and legal custody of the couple's son, Max.
Twenty-nine-year-old Aguilera and 33-year-old Bratman married in November 2005.
Their son was born in January 2008.
