Tony Curtis, one of the stars of Billy Wilder's classic comedy 'Some Like It Hot', has passed away at the age of 85.

ABC News in the US confirmed the actor's passing through his business manager and family spokesman, Preston Ahearn.

Curtis passed away in bed at his home in Henderson, Nevada.

Earlier 'Entertainment Tonight' in the US said a representative for the star's daughter, actress Jamie Lee Curtis, had confirmed his death but did not provide further details.

Curtis had been in poor health for a number of years and was hospitalised in July after an asthma attack.

Born Bernard Schwartz in New York City on 3 June, 1925, Curtis began his film career after serving in the US Navy during World War II.

He was Oscar-nominated in 1959 for his performance in 'The Defiant Ones' and also starred in 'The Sweet Smell of Success', 'Spartacus', 'The Boston Strangler' and opposite Jack Lemmon and Marilyn Monroe in 'Some Like It Hot', widely regarded as the best comedy ever made.
