'Strictly Come Dancing' contestant Ann Widdecombe has said that she was inspired to take part in the BBC One favourite by John Sergeant.

The 62-year-old former Tory MP was unveiled yesterday as one of this year’s contestants. The show gets underway this Saturday night. Widdecombe told The Sun "I took inspiration from John Sergeant. Watching him was the thing that persuaded me to do it."

Sergeant participated in the series in 2008. Controversially the public kept voting to keep the journalist in the competition despite massive criticism from the judges. Eventually he left the show of his own accord.

Widdecombe said "I'm this year's John Sergeant!" and added "The training is very tough. We're doing over five hours a day. I am fit, so I don't find it physically draining. But technically it's murder!

"I'm like a pantomime act - four steps behind everyone else. I'm doing it for fun. I don't dance, but I am enjoying it. I shall be looking for a dance partner who can cope with my ineptitude."

She continued "I don't think I shall be remotely emotional if I get voted off the first week, but if I stay in I'll enjoy it. Either way I win."
