The drama 'Mad Men' and comedy series 'Modern Family' were among the big winners at the Emmy Awards in the US on Sunday night.

'Mad Men' won Best Drama for the third year in a row, while 'Modern Family' won Best Comedy for the first time.

'Glee', which had been nominated in 19 categories, won in four, including a Best Supporting Actress (Comedy) Emmy for Jane Lynch, who plays Sue Sylvester.

The World War II series 'The Pacific' was the biggest winner on the night, winning in eight categories, including Best Miniseries.

Bryan Cranston was named Best Actor (Drama) for 'Breaking Bad' and his co-star, Aaron Paul, won Best Supporting Actor.

Kyra Sedgwick was named Best Actress (Drama) for 'The Closer', while 'The Good Wife' star Archie Panjabi was named Best Supporting Actress.

The Best Actress (Comedy) award went to Edie Falco for 'Nurse Jackie', 'The Big Bang' star Jim Parsons was Best Actor (Comedy) and Eric Stonestreet won Best Supporting Actor (Comedy) for his work on 'Modern Family'.

There was also an Emmy for Al Pacino for his portrayal of Doctor Jack Kevorkian in the TV movie 'You Don't Know Jack'.
