'Coronation Street' star Mikey North has revealed that his character is set for a "poignant" storyline in the coming months.

Speaking to RTÉ TEN, the actor, who plays Gary Windass in the show, said that his character's upcoming stint as a solider in Afghanistan will make for emotional scenes.

North said: "Gary's back on screen in a couple of weeks and it's the last time that you see him before he goes to Afghanistan."

"So he gets himself into a bit of a love triangle and has a scrape with the law."

Referring to the Afghanistan storyline, he said: "It's very current and it's going to be quite poignant."

"They're going to look at how it's going to affect his family and how it's going to affect him."

"I don't think he's going to be away long. He's going to come back, for whatever reason, so we're going to look at the aftermath and how that's going to affect him. It sounds good."

Referring to the real-life soldiers who serve overseas, he said: "These guys that go over there are amazing. I've got the utmost respect for them."

"So I've done my research into it and I hope I can do it justice. It should be good on screen. I'm looking forward to it."
