'EastEnders' star Steve McFadden has explained that his recent weight loss is due to his drug addiction storyline in the soap.

According to TV Times, the actor, who plays Phil Mitchell in the show, said that he followed a special diet in order to shed some weight for the plot.

McFadden said: "I stick to the regime rigidly - I've been doing it for two-and-a-half years. I've also lost quite a bit of weight for this drugs storyline."

"I'm the slimmest I've been for ages. I did it with a crash diet, which I wouldn't normally advocate."

"I felt it was important to lose weight, as I don't think food is very high on Phil's list of priorities!"

Speaking about his drug addiction storyline, he said: "You can hear it in my voice. I'm really tired and my eyes are sore - doing a storyline like this drains the life out of you."

"After my first day of shooting the crack story, I went and ate two ice-creams and had some fizzy drinks - you know, food that real addicts crave."

"Then I fell asleep in my dressing room for two hours."
