RTÉ broadcaster Gerry Ryan has died. He was 53.

He has presented 'The Gerry Ryan Show' on RTE 2fm since 1988.

He also hosted a number of television series, including 'Operation Transformation' and 'Ryan Confidential', throughout his career.

He is survived by his five children and his wife Morah, from whom he was separated.

A statement issued on behalf of Gerry Ryan's family said: "Gerry Ryan died today. Morah and his children are in complete shock. Please respect their privacy at this time."

In a statement, RTÉ said: "It is with profound sadness that RTÉ has learned of the sudden death of broadcaster Gerry Ryan."

"The thoughts and prayers of all RTÉ staff are with Gerry Ryan's family and his friends."

At the request of members of the public, RTÉ will open a book of condolences at RTÉ Radio Reception in Donnybrook tomorrow, 1 May. Members of the public may sign the book from 12 noon until 6pm.
