'Coronation Street' actress Helen Worth has revealed that she feared her character Gail McIntyre would be written out of the soap in an upcoming storyline.

Warning: spoiler alert!

Worth has played Gail since 1974 and viewers will see the character on trial for murder in the coming months.

The actress told the Sunday Mirror she was "genuinely anxious" when she read the script.

"I wasn't shocked, because it [the axe] can happen to an actor at any time," said Worth.

"But I was very pleased when I found out that whatever happens at Gail's trial, I will be staying in the show."

The new storyline will see Gail framed for the murder of her husband Joe McIntyre (Reece Dinsdale) by former neighbour Tracy Barlow (Kate Ford).

Joe accidentally killed himself in a botched insurance scam but Gail will be arrested at his wake.
