'Coronation Street' star Kym Marsh, who plays Michelle Connor in the drama, has claimed that the soap deserved its recent triumph at the National Television Awards.

The soap was named as the 'Most Popular Serial Drama' at the ceremony recently after receiving more public votes than its rivals 'EastEnders', 'Emmerdale' and 'Hollyoaks'.

Speaking in her New magazine column, Marsh said: "Corrie has lost out for years to 'EastEnders', which is unfair considering we beat them hands down in the viewing figures most weeks, so I think our win was well-deserved!"

The ceremony also saw 'Coronation Street's Craig Gazey winning the 'Most Popular Newcomer' award for his role as Graeme Proctor.
