One of the stars of 'EastEnders' is leaving the BBC soap to focus on a singing career.

The Mirror reports that Preeya Kalidas, who plays newlywed Amira Masood, is leaving the show this summer and plans to launch a pop career.

The 28-year-old actress is currently involved in one of the show's biggest storylines: her husband Syed (Marc Elliott) is gay and she becomes attracted to Albert Square newcomer Danny Mitchell (Liam Bergin).

A spokesperson for the actress said: "The BBC and Preeya agreed to extend her contract for a short period because of her prominent storyline. She is at present recording her first record, due to be released in the summer."
