The pop star Shakin' Stevens has been convicted of assaulting a press photographer at a concert in Co Antrim.

At Ballymena Magistrates Court the singer, whose real name is Michael Barrett, was convicted of assault and criminal damage and ordered to pay a local photographer, Hugo McNeice, £479 to compensate for a smashed camera lens.

The case arose out of an incident at a Shakin' Stevens concert in a Ballymena hotel.

A solicitor for the singer said he was disappointed with the outcome of the case and intended to appeal.
