Steve Rayner was last night named as Bill Cullen’s new Apprentice after he completed one final task against fellow candidate Stephen Higgins.

Speaking after his win, Rayner said "This means so much to me" while his rival from Galway broke down in tears saying "I am proud of myself to get this far, to learn humility."

The Star reports that Rayner, who is a recovering gambler and alcoholic, promised Cullen that he is a "grafter" and pledged to "hit the ground running."

Steve, from Skibbereen in Cork, who bagged the new €100,000 job, is set to get marry to his girlfriend, Eileen, in the summer. The couple are parents to 11-month-old Doireann and Eileen also has an older son.

Cullen told Rayner "At the end of the day it’s about results, and in this economy we get results from sales. That’s why I have to say Steve, you’re hired."
