Comedian Russell Brand feared "disaster" when he met girlfriend Katy Perry's Christian parents however he said that he won them over by quoting Nelson Mandela.

According to the Press Association the comedian, who first met the American singer's preacher parents at a ski resort in Austria last week, revealed his secret to charming the potential in-laws.

Speaking to Absolute Radio, Brand, 34, said: "There's a thing where the mom said 'Nothing's impossible', and I went, 'well, of course, Nelson Mandela said that everything is impossible until it's done', and she went, 'Oh', and she really enjoyed that."

The comedian continued "Obviously when I heard that my girlfriend had preacher parents, I thought, 'well, this has got a huge scope for disaster' but it's actually been quite good so far.

"I'm doing well, you know, because I'm committed to it and they're lovely, lovely people, it's been nice."
