Jedward third favourites after close shave

John and Edward - survive another week

Twins John and Edward Grimes are now third favourites to win the 'X Factor' as they survived another week in the TV talent show last night.

The siblings saw off Welsh teenager Lucie Jones after Simon Cowell refused to make a call between the two acts and put it to the public vote to see who should stay.

Jones had gained the least support and was kicked off the show, but was gracious in defeat. "I'm gutted, but the boys deserve to be here, they work harder than anyone," she said.

In a dig at the Grimes' debatable vocal abilities, Jones' mentor Dannii Minogue said: "I just wish all the good singers good luck in the singing competition. It shouldn't have happened."

On Saturday the twins managed to gain praise from their harshest critic for a performance of the theme from 'Ghostbusters'.

Cowell said: "It was possibly more entertaining than anything you have done before. Well done."

As it came to the crunch last night, the pop mogul said he would prefer to see the boys again rather than Jones, but left the final decision to viewers. His admission will fuel speculation that the record company boss in fact likes the siblings and has plans for them.

Bookmaker Ladbrokes is now offering odds of 3/1 that the twins will win the X Factor, and 4/1 that they will sign a deal with Cowell's label Syco.

The pair began with odds of 150/1 but they are now third favourite to win the series, behind Olly Murs at 6/4 and Joe McElderry at 5/2.
