In a frank interview Madonna has said that her work saved her from the pain of her divorce from Guy Ritchie.

Speaking to Rolling Stone Magazine, Madonna says her divorce from Guy Ritchie was so painful she could have thrown herself off a building, had her hectic worklife not saved her sanity.

She admits she struggled to balance the emotional fall-out from her break-up with film director Ritchie, 41, with her commitment to her US tour.

The 51-year-old said: "It was a challenging year. I may have thrown myself off a building. I think work saved me and I'm very grateful."

The mother of four insisted she was not the wild person most people would imagine: "I didn't really have my first drink until I got divorced the first time - from Sean Penn - when I was 30. I was kind of a geek in high school."

Speaking about her concerts she said: "Most of the joy of the shows is the magic of creating them - theatre. 'I'm a perfectionist. I like hard work. I like to sweat."
