The American actor and dancer Patrick Swayze has died of cancer at the age of 57.

He was best-known for his roles in the films 'Dirty Dancing', released in 1987, and 'Ghost' in 1990.

He was diagnosed as suffering from stage 4 pancreatic cancer in January of last year and died at his home on Monday.

His publicist, Annett Wolf, said in a statement: "Patrick Swayze passed away peacefully today with family at his side after facing the challenges of his illness for the last 20 months."

The actor had been working on a memoir with his wife of over 30 years, Lisa Niemi.

In a film career spanning over three decades, the Houston-born actor was nominated for Golden Globe awards for 'Dirty Dancing', 'Ghost' and 'To Wong Foo Thanks for Everything, Julie Newmar'.

He had a Top 10 hit with 'She's Like the Wind', the song from 'Dirty Dancing' which he performed and co-wrote.

Swayze trained as a dancer and performed for New York ballet companies before moving to Broadway and then to Hollywood.

Among his other film credits were 'The Outsiders', 'Red Dawn', 'Road House', 'Point Break' and 'Donnie Darko'.

He recently starred in the crime series 'The Beast'.
