British singer Leona Lewis has reportedly rescued a rabbit from a homeless man who threatened to eat it for his dinner.

The singer was walking along a street in Los Angeles when she saw a man sitting with the white bunny on a leash.

Lewis was reportedly so concerned over the creature's welfare that she asked the man what he was going to do with the animal, to which he replied, "Don't know - probably eat it."

According to The Sun, he apparently offered to sell it for only $20, but she gave him $100 and told him to spend the rest on food.

A friend has said that the 24-year-old has since adopted the rabbit and taken it to live in her Hollywood Hills home.

"Leona is the proud owner of a new white rabbit called Melrose which she is keeping in her garden,” the Sun quoted the friend as saying.

"She was shopping on Melrose Avenue last week when she spotted it being kept on a lead by a homeless man.

"She didn't think life on a lead was any way for a rabbit to live - then when he said he was going to eat it she knew she had to save it.

"Now it has the run of her garden without the fear of being cooked for dinner," the friend added.
