Michael Jackson's father has denied reports that he beat the singer when he was a child.

According to the San Francisco Chronicle, Joe Jackson has long been accused of ruling his family, and the Jackson 5 in particular, with an iron fist.

The late singer discussed the alleged abuse in several interviews, saying his father made him "regurgitate" with fear.

The Observer reported that the singer's sister La Toya Jackson also told of the "constant threat of violence" that their father imposed on his children.

However, in an interview with American TV presenter Chris Connelly, Joe Jackson insisted that he didn't punish his children any more severely than other parents.

He said: "Michael was never beat as they call it. And everyone spanked their kids when they did wrong. But not beat."

He also went on to claim that his wife also spanked their son: "Katherine spanked Michael more than I did, 'cause I was working two jobs and she was at home with him the most."

Jackson, who was also Michael's manager in his early career, insisted he has no regrets about his son's upbringing, saying: "No. I don't have any regrets. Yeah, we brought him up the right way."

Speaking to The Mirror, Tito Jackson, 55, said: "Michael always cried after he got a spanking, we all did. You get a spanking, you’re gonna cry, that’s natural.

"Most of the time Michael was so quick my father couldn't hit him. He'd swing the belt and Michael would be over there, he'd swing again and Michael would be over here.

"My father used to just stop and laugh because he couldn’t hit him.

"Michael would just dance around him. My father would get tired and give up."
