Former Royle Family actress Liz Smith will be shown going on a 'proper holiday' for the first time in her life - at the grand old age of 87, the BBC said yesterday.

The one-off programme will see Smith, known for her role as Nana, embark on a cruise.

Liz Smith's Summer Cruise shows the Bafta-winning star fulfil her modest ambition to join a group of like-minded individuals on holiday while she still can.

She leaves the security of her sheltered accommodation and heads off on a 10-day Adriatic cruise to Venice.

The BBC said the programme will be shown as part of BBC4's forthcoming Grey Expectations series, a season of shows dedicated to understanding life's twilight years.
