Nicholas Hughes, the son of poet Sylvia Plath, has taken his own life, 46 years after his mother killed herself, The London Times reports.

His sister Frieda Hughes, told the paper that her brother had been battling depression for some time.

Hughes had been working as a professor in Alaska. His sister paid tribute to "a loving brother, a loyal friend to those who knew him".
Nicholas was an infant when his mother, author of The Bell Jar, took her own life in 1963 following the breakup of her marriage to poet Ted Hughes.

She left bread and milk for the children and sealed their room against the gas. They were unharmed.

Critics blamed Ted Hughes for driving Plath to despair and their relationship has been a source of public fascination fanned by the 2003 film 'Sylvia' starring Gwyneth Paltrow and Daniel Craig as the troubled couple.
