It's Slumdog's night at the Oscars

'Slumdog Millionaire' was the big winner at the Academy Awards in Los Angeles last night, winning eight Oscars.

The film won the awards for Best Picture, Best Director (Danny Boyle), Adapted Screenplay (Simon Beaufoy) and Cinematography (Anthony Dod Mantle).

The drama also won the Oscars for Best Editing (Chris Dickens), Original Score (AR Rahman), Original Song ('Jai Ho', music by AR Rahman, lyric by Gulzar) and Sound Mixing (Ian Tapp, Richard Pryke and Resul Pookutty).

Sean Penn was named Best Actor for his performance in 'Milk' with Kate Winslet winning Best Actress for 'The Reader'.

Penélope Cruz won the Best Supporting Actress award for 'Vicky Cristina Barcelona' with the late Heath Ledger posthumously awarded the Best Supporting Actor Oscar for 'The Dark Knight'.

'WALL-E' was named Best Animated Feature Film with 'Departures' Best Foreign Language Film.

The award for Best Original Screenplay went to Dustin Lance Black for 'Milk'; 'In Bruges' writer-director Martin McDonagh had been nominated in this category.

'Man on Wire' was named Best Documentary Feature with 'Smile Pinki' Best Documentary Short.

In the technical categories there were awards for 'The Curious Case of Benjamin Button' (Best Makeup, Visual Effects, Art Direction), 'The Dark Knight' (Best Sound Editing) and 'The Duchess' (Costume Design).

'La Maison en Petits Cubes' won the award for Best Animated Short with 'Spielzeugland (Toyland)' named Best Live Action Short; the Irish film 'New Boy' had been nominated in the Live Action Short category.
