German-born and Kerry-raised 'Hunger' star Michael Fassbender has won an award at the London Critics' Circle Awards - for British Actor of the Year.

Fassbender's 'Hunger' co-star, Liam Cunningham, was nominated in the Best British Actor in a Supporting Role category; in previous years other Irish actors have also been nominated in the British categories.

The director of 'Hunger', Steve McQueen, won the award for Breakthrough British Film-Maker.

'The Wrestler' was named Film of the Year with its star, Mickey Rourke, winning the Actor of the Year award.

Kate Winslet was named British Actress of the Year for 'The Reader' and 'Revolutionary Road' with Kristin Scott-Thomas named British Actress of the Year for 'I've Loved You for So Long'.

'Slumdog Millionaire' was named British Film of the Year with its director, Danny Boyle, winning British Director of the Year and screenwriter, Simon Beaufoy, winning Screenwriter of the Year.

The award for Director of the Year went to David Fincher for 'The Curious Case of Benjamin Button'.

The award for Best British Actor in a Supporting Role was won by Eddie Marsan for 'Happy-Go-Lucky' with Tilda Swinton named Best British Actress in a Supporting Role for 'The Curious Case of Benjamin Button'.

'Waltz with Bashir' was named Foreign Language Film of the Year.

Thomas Turgoose won the Young British Performance of the Year award for 'Somers Town' and 'Eden Lake'.

Judi Dench received the Outstanding Contribution to Cinema award.
