Kate Winslet and Sean Penn were among the winners at the Screen Actors Guild Awards in Los Angeles last night.

Winslet won the Best Supporting Actress award for her performance in 'The Reader'; Penn was named Best Actor for his performance in 'Milk'.

Meryl Streep was the recipient of the Best Actress award for her performance in 'Doubt' with the late Heath Ledger posthumously honoured with the Best Supporting Actor award for 'The Dark Knight'.

The Outstanding Performance by the Cast of a Motion Picture award went to the stars of 'Slumdog Millionaire'.

In the television categories Hugh Laurie was named Best Actor for 'House' with Sally Field Best Actress for 'Brothers and Sisters'.

Paul Giamatti was named Best Actor in a Miniseries for 'John Adams' with his co-star, Laura Linney, winning the Best Actress in a Miniseries award.

The cast of 'Mad Men' won the award for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series award.

There were three awards for the comedy series '30 Rock': stars Alec Baldwin and Tina Fey were named Best Comic Actor and Actress and the cast of the show also won the Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series award.

The stunt awards were won by the stunt specialists on 'The Dark Knight' and 'Heroes'.
