Guillaume Depardieu, the actor son of French film legend Gerard Depardieu, has died. He was 37.

Reuters reports that Gerard Depardieu's agency said that Guillaume Depardieu died of pneumonia yesterday.

The agency told Agence France Presse: "He passed away early this afternoon after having contracted a virus which led to a devastating bout of pneumonia."

Guillaume Depardieu, who won Best New Male Talent at the French Oscars the Cesars in 1996 for his performance in 'Les Apprentis', attracted great media attention for his life off the screen.

He was sent to prison for the first time at the age of 17 and when he was 22 he was jailed for heroin trafficking.

In 1995 he was in a motorcycle accident, after which he caught a superbug and after a number of unsuccessful operations had his right leg amputated.

Guillaume Depardieu had a difficult relationship with his father and repeatedly accused him of neglecting him.

He said of his father in his 2004 book 'Tout Donner (Giving Everything)': "I love him and I hate him for the same reasons. For his impotence. For his way of fleeing life, and existence, and fighting against it at the same time."
