The producers of hospital drama ‘ER’ are hoping to bring George Clooney back for the show’s final season, with a number of big names have already having signed up to come back.

Reuters reports that ER executive David Zabel told TV Guide that storylines for the 15th season of the show had been thought up for all important past characters, including Clooney’s Dr Doug Ross and nurse Carol Hathaway, the character played by Julianna Margulies.

Zabel said he was, "optimistic that we might be able to get them all. We have a really good story line for every (major) character from the past to show (the actors) what we want to do."

Noah Wyle, who played Dr John Carter, and Laura Innes, who played Dr Kerry Weaver, have already agreed to make a return to the show while Anthony Edwards and Paul McCrane, whose characters - Dr Mark Greene and Dr Robert Romano – both died, are set to appear in flashback scenes.

Clooney’s publicist said on Monday: "He is on record as saying he is not coming back. It is something he has already done. He is busy making movies."

The 15th series is due to end with a two-hour special that will be screened in May 2009 in the US.
