Elbow have won the 2008 Mercury Prize, one of the most prestigious awards in music.
The quintet won the award for their fourth album 'The Seldom Seen Kid'.
Accepting the award, the band's singer, Guy Garvey, said: "I know we're supposed to be cool but this is quite literally the best thing that has ever happened to us."
Garvey dedicated the award to a friend of the band's who died some years ago and inspired some of the songs on the album.
Radiohead were nominated for their album 'In Rainbows' and were joined on the shortlist by The Last Shadow Puppets ('The Age of Understatement'), Estelle ('Shine') and Adele ('19').
Completing the nominees were: British Sea Power ('Do You Like Rock Music?'), Robert Plant and Alison Krauss ('Raising Sand'), Burial ('Untrue'), Laura Marling ('Alas, I Cannot Swim'), Rachel Unthank and The Winterset ('The Bairns'), Neon Neon ('Stainless Style') and Portico Quartet ('Knee Deep in the North Sea').
